SED-IT Goals
IT Client Infrastructure
- Single-sign-on with Kerberos for all machines.
- Network based installations on all machines.
- Remote assistance possible for all clients.
- Automatic backups to the server.
Network Infrastructure
- 100Mbps for all ports with Gigabit uplinks on the switches. Currently we only have this for 3rd through 7th floors in SED (Two Silber Way)
- Gigabit on a few ports such as for servers and video workstations.
File Server
- One Kerberos based file server that supports Macs and PCs. Currently the SED server does not use Kerberos. However, as it is AFP, it handles Mac file names. The new file server, SED-Files uses CIFS which needs Mac OS X 10.5 to handle all Mac filenames.
- A two layer deep hierarchy for all groups.
Databases
- To have all databases be on central servers.
- To have all directory information come from one and only one SED database.
- To have Graduate Admissions and all other databases as closely tied to BU sources as reasonably possible.
To have a database for all things that should have databases.

- Have an established computer replacement policy.
- Get the best value for our money spent on technology.
