Network Ports
Every single room should have a least one network port activated. The network port should always be lower left (LL). The telephone port should always be upper left (UL).
If you want a network port changed or activated, please contact sed-it@bu.edu.
Please note - SED-IT and Ralph Brooks work together on network ports.
Static Hostnames
If you feel you need a static hostname, please contact sed-it@bu.edu with your request. Please include why you want the static name and how it will be used.
Network Speed
The majority of network ports at SED are capable of 100 Mb per second. If you feel you are having network speed problems, please contact sed-it@bu.edu
Wireless
All of Two Sherborn should have access to wireless. You will need to use the BU VPN and your BU username and password to connect. If you are hosting a large event where you expect to have many guests with laptops the wireless network can be opened for that event with prior notice. Please contact sed-it@bu.edu to request this.
In order to make things easier for shared laptops, it is important to turn on the wireless BEFORE login. Go to the VPN and select Options -> Windows Logon Properties -> Enable start before logon
Connecting From Home (VPN)
If you are connecting from home, and something doesn't work, use the BU VPN.
One exception - you can now e-mail from home using your BU account if you use secure SMTP.
You can use the VPN to access private hostnames (ad) and IP space (10 net) on BU's network.
Please note, ALL DNS queries and ALL TRAFFIC go through the VPN onto BU's network while at home. If you just want traffic destined for BU to go through the VPN follow these directions:
- Before you start the VPN, open it
- Click "Modify"
- Click "Authentication"
Put "BostonUonly" for the Name, Password, and Confirm Password.
All DNS queries will still go to BU, however.
BU Firewall
To see BU wide blocked ports, see the BU Firewall
Standards
Please see Standards for details on network standards.
