Security

Good Passwords

  • Never tell anyone your Kerberos password.
  • Never reuse your Kerberos password anywhere else.
  • Include at least upper case letters, lower case letters, and numbers.
  • It is better to pick a hard to guess password and write down the password in a safe place, than to pick an easy to guess password

Virus Protection

  • You should always have virus protection software installed on your computer. You can get the BU version of MacAfee VirusScan here: http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/virus/software/

  • Use Virus Scan at home too. BU allows you to download it and run it free on your home computer to help keep BU safe.

Manual Scan a Mac

1. Locate VirusScan in Applications folder as shown:

  • scan1.jpg

2. Open Scan program.

3. Drag and Drop your user profile icon in the Drop items or click here area and click on Start.

System and Application Updates

  • You should have automatic system updates turned on.

Firewalls

These days, most OSes come with firewalls. See http://www.bu.edu/pcsc/desktop/windows/firewall/ for details.

Also, the BU network itself has a firewall.

Pick secure Products and Protocols

  • Don't use telnet. Use SSH instead.
  • Don't use FTP. Use SCP or SFTP instead.
